Stevenage boss Darren Sarll: We’re frustrated but we’re trying to add consistency

A frustrated Darren Sarll spoke after Stevenage’s 1-1 draw with Crawley Town on Tuesday evening.

The home side took the lead just before half-time through a superb goal from Danny Newton, who dropped his shoulder to beat his man before firing a powerful, low drive beyond the reach of the visitors keeper Glenn Morris.

However an equally excellent goal just after the interval from on-loan forward Ibrahim Meite levelled the game in wet and windy conditions. The 21-year-old loanee from Cardiff could have scored prior to Newton’s opener but a fine save from Boro keeper Joe Fryer denied him.

A disappointed Sarll said: “It was frustrating. I don’t think there was anyone in the ground tonight who wasn’t frustrated.

“We controlled large parts of the first half but after they scored their goal they made things difficult for us in the way they set up.

“If you look at the seven goals we’ve conceded they have all come from individual errors by players who have yet to hit full form.”

Sarll refused to blame Tom Pett for the goal Boro conceded after the hard-working midfielder gave the ball away which led to Meite’s equaliser.

However the Boro boss said: “Not many teams will choose West Brom over Barcelona. It’s important that we keep playing football.

“It wasn’t naive to concede.

“It wasn’t naive, it was simply a mistake from a player with more than 100 games under his belt. Once we iron out those problems and get people playing at full form then it will make a difference – because I don’t think we are all there yet.

“Some players need eight or nine games at the start of the season to get going and to find their level of performances we know they’re capable of. And once we do that then I think we’ll be more than OK.

“We are disappointed at conceding a goal and drawing on a night with horrible weather conditions – but last year I think we may have conceded a second goal.

“We are trying to add consistency, and we know we should have taken more points but it’s OK.”
